[DVD Review (R2)] THE GO MASTER
This is the second of the two documentaries I’d been sent to reveiw recently, and it couldn’t have been more different if it tried!
To be fair, this is more a docu-drama than a documentray, but either way, The Go Master tells the tale of Wu Qingyuan’s life, from childhood to old age, as he perfects his natural talent for the game of Go and becomes the top player in the world, or The Go master, to many.
Now if you understand Go then you have an advantage over me, as I have no idea about the rules or any other part of the game and any hope that this DVD would enlighten me in that respect were sadly left unfullfilled.
Just as my hope of learning any real information about Wu were left unfullfilled too! Although we do learn some things this is a much more poetic and ethereal look at the mans life and passion for Go rather than an in depth study of the subjects.
The movie floats from one moment to another in Wu’s life, giving us little glimpses into his world, sometimes with onscreen text explaining what was or had been happening, but as Go seems to be a thoughtful and contemplative game to play, this is a thoughtful and contemplative look at the master of the games life.
It is beautifully shot, with every scene evoking the same thoughtfulness and poetry as the game itself seems to evoke in it’s players and , while I don’t think I’d rush to watch it again, it is perfect viewing for a thoughtful and dreamy afternoon.

Yes, yes… 3 is hardly “prolific” I know, but when you understand how ****ing busy this guy is and all that, this is impressive!

Heh cheers. It helped that I’ve been ill quite a bit recently so have managed to catch up on a lot of watching of DVD’s and managed to get pen to paper to actually review them!
