[DVD Review (R2)] STAR WRECK: IN THE PIRKINNING

starwreckStar Wreck is one of those movies that probably wouldn’t have been made, let alone released on DVD, before people started releasing fan made movies on the internet. In fact, that’s where the movie had its genesis, as the first Star Wreck story was released on the internet in 1992, followe by II – V, which was released in 1997 to wide spread acclaim. That reception promoted the makers, all from Finland, to create a longer, more ambitious, follow up, which took 7  years to finish, and has now been released on DVD. But, the question is, is it any good?

Star Wreck VI: In the Pirkinning tells the story of Captain Pirk and his crew who, after traveling back in time to save the world, have been stranded on Present Day Earth. Their presence in this time, though, seems to have an effect on time and the past isn’t unfolding as they expected it too.

Deciding to usher in the technological advances that paved the way to his own time, Pirk conquers the world and makes himself Emperor – and sets out across the Galaxy until its fleet encounter an anomaly. At which point, things get really weird!

So what’s it like? Well, lets get the positives out of the way first. Firstly the direction – its actually not that bad! In fact I’d say it was no worse (if not better) than Uwe Boll. Secondly, the special effects. They are outstanding, easily comparable to some big budget movies. And unfortunately, the special effects are the only thing worth watching this parody for.

For a start, the acting is atrocious. I know I know, they are not professional actors, but if you are going to release a movie on DVD, then I’m going to rate your acting, and its worse than anything I can ever remember seeing – and that includes my all time worst movie – Alone In The Dark!

Its painful to watch these amateurs at times – and I can’t find anything more to say than “as actors the entire cast is horrible!”

Also, its a parody. mainly of Star Trek. And I’m sorry, but that show is painfully close to self-parody itself a lot of the time so you better be bringing something excellent to the table when parodying it – and unfortunately, they didn’t.

All the tired old clichés are trooped out, and I just didn’t find it entertaining. And I really wish I had, as the amount of work put in is stunning and the SFX are mind blowing.

Unfortunately, the SFX is badly let down by the rest of the movie . If you see it on TV or on-line, then check it out for the SFX alone. But I honestly cannot recommend a purchase, even with the amount of extras you get in the “Imperial Edition”.
