[DVD Review (R2)] NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D

Depending on how often you read this site, you will no doubt be aware that I love zombie movies. I do, no matter what the movie is if it has zombies in it then I will usually enjoy it. In fact, I’m of the opinion that a lot of bad movies could be improved by dropping a zombie into the story (come on, you can’t tell me that a zombie attack in a movie like Step Up 2: The Streets, for example, wouldn’t have improved it in some way?).

So I was quite happy to settle down and watch this remake of George A. Romero’s zombie classic, Night of the Living Dead, but did it turn out to be another fun filled zombie fest or a damp squib?

The Plot

Barb (played by Brianna Brown) and her brother Johnny are traveling to the country for their aunt’s funeral. Delayed along the way they head straight to the cemetary which they find eerily empty.

But suddenly they are attacked by zombies – Johnny escapes in the car, leaving Barb alone. Running from the cemetary, Barb is eventually attacked by more zombies, but is rescued by Ben, a college student on his way to a friends farm. Taking Barb with him, the two head for the Coopers farm where Barb tries to convince Henry Cooper of the danger that they are all in. Unfortunately, Barb’s warnings are unheeded by the pot-growing Coopers – that is until the zombies start to attack the farm house.

But it isn’t until the local mortician Gerald Tovar Jr (played by Sid Haig) arrives that the truth of the zombie infection is revealed, and the fate of these survivors hangs in the balance.

The Review

Let’s get the positives out of the way first, shall we? The 3D isn’t actually that bad. It’s obviously a gimmick, but they don’t fall into the trap of throwing things at the screen for the sake of it, and for the most part it serves to give a slight sense of depth to the movie.

Unfortunately, that’s about all the positives that can be said about the movie. The acting is poor, the characters are bland, the zombies are laughable, the story is terrible and you really don’t care if any of the characters live or die.

Brianna Brown as Barb, is possibly the best thing about the movie, but she is left floundering in a script that is terrible. And genre stalwart Sid Haig must have been laughing all the way to the bank when he telegraphed in his performance as it is quite possibly the worst I have ever seen him be.

The rest of the cast make little to no impact, floundering around trying to act scared and failing.

There is an attempt to add a little humour to the proceedings, with the pot farmers/smokers, but this falls pretty flat on every attempt. And it’s not even like there is a lot of gore to liven proceedings up!

There are no saving graces here, the makers added in some sex and drugs to a zombie movie classic, re-worked the plot (a little) and delivered a sub-par movie that certainly cannot be recommended by this zombie fan.

Terrible, terrible, terrible film. Really not much needs to be said other than it’s terrible.
