[DVD Review (R2)] CITIES OF THE UNDERWORLD SEASON 1 & 2
One of the things that I am utterly fascinated by is history. I love watching documentaries about the past and where we have come from, as it gives us a wonderful insight into what the world was like, what it has become and where we have come from.
And one of the series I have enjoyed watching on the TV was Cities of the Underworld, so I was quite happy to find the complete Season 1 & 2 boxset sat on my doormat for me to review, as it gave me not only a chance to re-watch a show I enjoy but also to see some episodes that I missed before.
But how does it stand up to repeat viewings?
Hosted for part of the first season by Eric Geller, before being replaced by Don Wildman for the rest of the series, Cities of the Underworld takes us below the streets of some of the most well known cities of the world, including Rome, Paris, Edinburgh, New York & Dublin. Exploring the places where normal people are not allowed to go, and unearthing secrets long buried by time.
It truly is fascinating seeing what is below the streets of the cities where people live their lives with no thought as to the past or what is a couple of feet below them. From secret bunkers to distilleries, and taking in the bunkers of the Nazis below the streets of Berlin and even taking in the tunnels that the Viet Cong fought the Vietnam war from and the ancient cities of Jerusalem and Bucharest, with a helping of Freemasons this visual feast of the past is helped along by high quality CGI recreations of the past which help to show how these long lost locations and tunnels were buried by time.
These are places that we would never be able to see, and certainly never visit, and it is truly wonderous what is below us. While the skyscrapers and buildings of our cities continue to grow towards the skies there are just as amazing buildings and constructions below us, just waiting to be exposed once more.
But does it stand up to repeat viewings? Or once you’ve watched it once is that it, and it’s just going to sit on your DVD shelf to never be watched again?
I’d have to say that this series does indeed stand up to repeat watching! The hosts are never less than interesting and, even though I had seen quite a few of these episodes before, there were things that I’d missed or not picked up on the first time round and I’m sure there are even more things that I didn’t notice or see this time, which I will hopefully find the next time I watch it.
If, like me, you are fascinated by history, and are interested in what is literally metres below our feet, then I can fully recommend picking this DVD release up and adding it to your collection to enjoy again and again.
