[DVD Review (R1)] MEET DAVE

Dear Eddie Murphy

You’re the guy that made, with Delirious and Raw, two of the funniest stand-up “movies” I’ve ever seen in my life (and I have seen a fair few, let me tell you!). You made Beverly Hills Cop, which is undoubtedly one of the best blockbusters of the 80s, and the sequel is a huge heap of fun. We’ll not mention Beverly Hills Cop 3 okay? In fact throughout the 80s you gave so much genuinely brilliant, timeless pieces of comedy fare to us that NOBODY can ever take away them away from you… (Although it seems you yourself seem determined to sully them!). In one three year period you gave us 48 Hours, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. That’s pretty friggin’ impressive! And in the latter part of the decade you hit us up with Coming To America too, which is one of the greatest comedies ever made!

I haven’t got the time nor the energy to pay mention to your greatest ever performance in Bowfinger or, thank god, the whole host of sucky movies you’ve made since 1989 so let’s just crack on with the point at hand… Please, please, please know that it pains me greatly to say this but, after watching Meet Dave (and this is even taking into account that it is more relatively likeable then most movies you’ve made recently AND it co-stars the enormously lovely Elizabeth Banks!), I want you to stop making movies.

Full stop! Just stop! You don’t like making them, it’s obvious. You don’t have much – nay, ANY – self-respect and its getting to the point where you are being regarded as a total joke, in need of a bigger hit then a crack addict! It’s embarrassing! So embarrassing that it is starting to take the shine of my SNL: Best of Eddie Murphy DVD and all those classic movies I listed previously.

Seriously… stop!

Thanks

GAZZ

PS

This includes Beverly Hills Cop 4. You thought you had problems with John Landis not understanding what was needed of a third movie? You’ve just hired Brett Ratner. Go watch Rush Hour 3. Then walk, nay run, away from that project too! Let me know when you’re going to go back on the stage to do some stand-up. I’ll switch my “interest” back on!

He can’t stop. He’s got a dozen kids, legit and illegit, plus an ex-wife to pay off.

Oh come on, he’s filthy rich! And that’s no excuse anyway, because I know that he has been offered ridiculous amounts of money to mount a stand-up comeback in Vegas and have it released through Paramount and he keeps turning them down.

He’s just a ****ing lazy bum who has burnt out his talent. Simple as!
