[BLU RAY Review] BRIDE WARS

bridewarsAh, the world of the “chick flick”. Somewhere, it has to be said, I really don’t enjoy visiting. That’s not to say that some chick flicks aren’t entertaining, but if I has a choice I’d pick an action movie over a chick flick, for example, on any day of the week. Still, I was sent Bride Wars to watch and review , so I did and I have………..

Bride Wars is all about two childhood friends, who when they were younger were taken to a top hotel for lunch by their mothers. While there they saw a bride heading to her wedding and ever since that day their dream weddings were going to take place at that hotel in the month of June.

Cut to years later and Viv (Kate Hudson) is a successful lawyer and Emma (Anne Hathaway) is a teacher, and are still the best of friends and still dreaming about the day their boyfriends will pro pose. Then one day Viv finds an engagement ring in the closest and is over the moon. But before her boyfriend can propose, Emma’s boyfriend pops the question! Although over joyed for her friend, Viv forces her boyfriend to propose as well – and soon the two friends are planning their weddings together. And both want to get married at that Hotel – so go to see the only wedding planner who can arrange it. And being the good friends that they are, one goes for a date at the beginning of June and the other goes for the end of June.

Unfortunately, a clerical error causes the wedding to be booked on the same day. And as neither of the two is willing to move their wedding date, a war breaks out between the two former friends to try and sabotage the others Big day.

And if you are still interested after that, then you might make it through the movie without wanting to scratch your own eyes out. Me? Its the longest movie I’ve ever sat through. Even though its only 89 minutes long, it felt soooooo much longer!

The problems that I had with it are many.

Firstly the main characters are just not likeable. Viv is an absolute horoorshow who, if she was your friend, you would end up telling her to calm the fuck down! Emma is an absolute spineless wimp who you just wish would grow some balls. But then, when she does, it seems so out of character it just doesn’t fit!

Second, the one up manship between the two almost feels like a Jackass style campaign – and almost feels at odds with the rest of the movie.

Third, its a comedy. So surely that means it should be funny, right? Well, sorry, but it’s not. Which is kind of a flaw when it comes to comedies.

Fourth – who the hell cares? Its a vacuous plot, about vacuous characters who you couldn’t care less about. And yet, its obvious from the start how it all will end.

The actors are terrible, giving one dimensional life to one dimensional cyphers. The direction is ponderous, and the plotting laboured. The script awful and not funny.

Yes, its safe to say this isn’t a good movie. In fact, the only thing going for it is the transfer, where the video is crisp and well defined, the colours warm and true to life and the shots of New York are pretty stunning.

And unfortunately….that’s it.
