Zack Snyder Chosen To Direct Superman

The Hollywood Reporter have just announced that Warner Bros have hired Zack Snyder as the director for the forthcoming David Goyer penned, Christopher Nolan produced entry into the Superman franchise. And I have to say, I’m quite surprised.

Ever since the failure of Bryan Singer’s reboot, Superman Returns (if you can call a film that grossed over $200 million a failure!) Warners had to get a new Superman film into production before 2011, otherwise certain copyrights would have reverted to the heirs of creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel, & they eventually turned to Christopher Nolan & David Goyer, who had pleased so many comic book fans with the Batman Begins & The Dark Knight films – news which many comic book fans took as a very positive move.

Since then, there has been much speculation regarding exactly who would be taking the directorial duties on the new film, with names like Jonathan Nolan, Ben Affleck & even Robert Zemeckis being thrown about. And, of course, Zack Snyder.

And now it seems that Warners are going to trust the franchise in the hands of the director who has, it has to be said, delivered pretty stunning comic book adaptions with 300 &, of course, Watchmen.

But while I really like Snyder as a director, & I love 300, Watchmen & Day of the Dead, and am really excited about his latest film Sucker Punch – which looks stunning – there’s a part of me that wonders if he is right for this film.

So far his films have been graphically violent &, while visually striking, all share a certain “look” that I’m not 100% sure is right for Superman.

Still, it has been proven that Snyder has a reverence for comics, so he should at least deliver a faithful Superman tale – and, apparently, the new film will once again share a link with the Richard Donner Superman films by featuring the return of General Zod (so we’ll get to see Superman actually fighting someone for once) & I am genuinely excited by how Goyer has approached the character, so this is one that I’m going to be following quite closely.

So what do you think? Is Snyder a good fit? And just who do you think should put the cape on?

Superman will, probably, hit the cinemas in 2012 and, who knows, we may end up with some more news regarding the film in the next couple of days from the New York Comic-Con.
