Yet Another Vampire Flick Gets The Greenlight!
What is it with vampire movies at the moment? First of all we get 30 Days of Night, then we get a remake of Near Dark. Then it gets announced that Russell Mulcahy is going to be directing Zen In The Art Of Slaying Vampires and NOW it’s announced that David S. Goyer, director of the somewhat disappointing Blade Trinity, is returning to the world of vampires with “Baltimore, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire”. That is one hell of a mouthful for a movie title!
Baltimore.. is an “illustrated novel” that was written by Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola. Mignola created Hellboy and Golden has written plenty of Buffy books and even worked with Mignola before on the Hellboy: Odd Jobs book. So the quality of the writers is pretty high. But what the hell is the story? Well, the novel tells the tale of the awakening of supreme evil on Earth and follows Lord Henry Baltimore as he is bitten by a demonic vampire bat on the battlefields of World War I. The plague kills all of his family so Balitmore creates a group to destroy the embodiment of all evil, The Red King.
I have to be honest and say that this does sound fantastic. I haven’t seen any of the artwork or read any of the pages of the novel but I love Mignola’s art and I think I’m going to hunt this down sometime soon, but if they can nail this story on film then we could be in for a treat. I just hope Goyer is up to the task….. I wasn’t that impressed by Blade Trinity but I do want to see The Invisible and I have high hopes for Magneto so let’s reserve judgement on the director for the moment. But the concept itself is a wonderful one and I am pretty interested in this.
