Why Does 50 Cent Keep Getting Acting Roles?

Look, I’m no hip-hop aficionado, but I do enjoy some artists from this genre (love ya Outkast!).  There’s some truly talented people in this line of work, and I think the media sometimes gives them a raw deal, though the vast majority of rap songs consist of “Look at my car/money/women I’m so cool I’ll kill you now do a cool dance move!”  That being said, I have to ask this question: why does 50 Cent keep on popping up in films lately? Every time I look, it seems like I’m finding news about him getting a bit role in a film.  He’s just landed himself a role in an indie flick with some legit actors.  Now, there are some people who have successfully crossed over from rapping to acting.  Will Smith is the shining example of this.  I’d even throw Marky Mark Wahlberg into the funky bunch (see what I did there?!  Yeah, I know.  I’m good…) of guys who have made the successful transition.  It’s not impossible to crossover into the film world from a different line of work.  Problem is, this small group is small for a reason.  Being talented in one arena does not automatically guarantee that you have talents elsewhere.  Poor Mr. Cent has somehow convinced himself that we want to see him act.  We don’t.

Lemme be blunt here: dude can’t act worth shit.  Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was terrible, and he was terrible in it.  If you can’t even re-enact the events of your own life, that tells me something.  Eminem is no actor, either, but 8 Mile is a pretty entertaining flick simply because Em has serious screen presence.  You can’t take your eyes off the man when he’s onscreen.  What he lacks in ability, he makes up for in enthusiasm and raw charisma.  When 50 is onscreen, it’s a miracle if I don’t fall asleep.  Even in his limited screentime in Righteous Kill, he manages to bring the film to a screeching halt with his lack of acting ability.  Similarly to his rap style, he doesn’t speak so much as he mumbles lines under his breath.  He has the screen presence of a moldy piece of toast.  He looks uncomfortable onscreen and I feel uncomfortable and bored watching him.  He’s not the worst actor I’ve ever seen, but just because you’ve convinced people that you can rap doesn’t mean that you’re gonna convince them that you can act.  The only reason that he is cast in films is to draw in urban audiences, and that isn’t even working, judging by the box-office tallies of his films.

So, to the studios who keep on casting him, I implore you to cut this crap out.  He’s not gonna make you any money, and he’s gonna ruin your films.  Do you want that?  And Mr. Cent, I have no real problem with you.  You got shot nine times and lived.  I respect that.  It’s not like you’re hurting for money.  You have your talents, although bullet-dodging doesn’t seem to be one of them.  You have endorsement deals, a clothing line, and a lucrative music career.  You should just leave the films to the pros.

The reason why I didn’t say “rappers” in the title is because not all of them are shit actors. Like I said, Em wasn’t half bad in 8 Mile. Snoop wasn’t bad in Training Day. LL wasn’t bad in Deep Blue Sea, although the character was annoying to me. I can’t say that ALL of them are crap actors, but 50 is the one that just irritates me the most.

I just found this VERY old copy of Premiere in my wardrobe and was flicking through it and in the ‘announced’ section, it says:

“Matt Damon and Samuel L. Jackson are committed to TRAINING DAY for Warner Bros”

LOL. Wrong. But how cool would that have made an already cool movie?
