VENOM Movie Coming?

According to the IESB movement is being made on a standalone Venom movie, spinning off from the Spider-Man franchise. To be honest it was only a matter of time before this kind of thing happened, as there are a huge cast of characters involved inĀ  Spider-Man that could be conceivably spun off into their own movies, and it isn’t really a surprise that fanboy favourite Venom is going to be the first character they try it on.

Here’s a snippet from IESB:

We’ve confirmed that “the studio” has met recently with several “A list writers” about a spin-off film.

Eight years ago, New Line Cinema held the theatrical rights to Venom. Since then, the rights have reverted back Marvel. But does Sony have complete control over the character since he was a part of Spidey 3 or does Marvel control the rights to the character with Sony only having distribution rights?

Now this is interesting for the simple fact that the movie going public now associates the Venom character with Topher Grace, and without the comic book fans knowledge that Venom is as much the symbiote as it is Eddie Brock they may face a tough challenge in having a different character under the black goo.

This also makes you wonder if this can exist outside of the current Spider-Man franchise universe, or if Sony do indeed have some control over Venom or if this is going to be totally separate.

Personally speaking I hope that this is indeed part of the current Spider-Man franchise as it would be a good way of expanding the current universe and injecting a little bit more character into both Eddie Brock and Venom, turning him from the rather insipid creation from Spider-Man 3 into something much more interesting and eventually returning him to the Spider-Man franchise as a much more interesting and threatening villain for Spidey to fight. Hell, it could even lead into a “Maximum Carnage” style Spider-Man movie.

Of course, until something concrete slips out of Marvel this is all so much flim-flam and it might never get past the entrance of Development Hell. Until then, why not use the comments section to speculate on what could be done with a standalone Venom movie?
