The Sunday Mirror Claims They Know Who Will Be Catwoman!
There I was, flicking through the Sunday newspaper, when a headline caught my eye – and quite honestly it was a headline the likes of which I really didn’t think I would ever see!
Ever since the runaway success of The Dark Knight at the box office people have been talking about the third movie. Now, while I agree it’s pretty much a given that Warner Bros are going to want Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan, David Goyer and Christian Bale (and everyone else) to regroup for the third movie, as far as anyone is aware this isn’t going to be any time soon! Let’s look at it this way, Christian Bale is currently making Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, and then he’ll be moving onto Killing Pablo but I’m sure it won’t be long before he is lined up for a couple of other movies! Jonathan Nolan is currently working the screenplay for Terminator Salvation and then he is moving onto writing duties on Interstellar. David S. Goyer is down to direct The Unborn and then X-Men Origins: Magneto and for writing duties on those two as well as The Flash. In fact, the only person who isn’t busy at the moment is Christopher Nolan and I’m pretty sure it won’t be that long before we hear what he’s going to be doing next.
Now, the reason I mentioned all of that is because of what the Sunday Mirror reported today. Not only do they “reveal” who will be taking the role of Catwoman in the next Batman movie, but also what other villain is going to appear in the movie and what it’s title is going to be! Oh, and don’t forget the provisional shooting date!
Enough delaying? OK, here’s the story as reported by The Sunday Mirror:
CHER UP FOR NEW BATMAN
Cher has been lined up to play Catwoman in the next Batman movie.
The Oscar-winning actress and singer is in talks to star opposite Christian Bale in the third of the “dark” Batman films.
Cher, 62, was invited to join a cast which includes Johnny Depp as The Riddler.
A studio executive revealed: “Cher is Nolan’s first choice to play Catwoman. He wants her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years.”
“The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfieffer Halle Berry’s purring creations.”
Shooting on the film, provisionally titled The Caped Crusader, is due to start in Vancouver early next year.
Seriously, I nearly spat my coffee all over my living room when I read that.
So Cher is going to be Catwoman. And Johnny Depp, who I know has been mentioned on the internet as being in the running for The Riddler, is definitely taking part and filming is going to start early next year.
Riiight. I’ll believe it when I see it. Apart from anything else, everyone involved seems to be a little too tied up at the moment for filming to be starting early next year. And, unless they did it this weekend, I don’t think the Nolan’s and Goyer have been working on a storyline or script for a third movie. And they have gone on record as saying that they don’t like the idea of a third movie as they don’t know how they could top this (which is kinda what they said after Batman Begins, but never mind).
Saying that, I think Depp would probably be superb as The Riddler. And I even like the name of The Caped Crusader, but I don’t think it’s a good fit for a third movie – or a natural follow on from The Dark Knight. But Cher as Catwoman? Give me strength!
I seriously expect this to turn out to just be an unsubstantiated rumour, but just suppose it’s not. Do you like the idea of Depp and Cher as The Riddler and Catwoman? And what about that title? Alternatively, why not share what you’d like from the third movie and who you’d like to see in it (either just the villains or the actors will do).

Uh, NO.
Nothing is going on regarding the next movie. So any rumor at all that comes out is bullshit.
Oh I agree entirely Grundy, it was just the way they reported it as if it was a fact and the stupidty of the idea of casting Cher as Catwoman which made me even want to share it with you.
Course, it would be funny if this exploded around the internet now.
They should adapt one of the Gotham Central arcs for the third movie. It would negate the need for the blockbuster formula that even The Dark Knight pandered to. Have cops solving crimes against the backdrop of superheroism and supervillainy, having their paths cross now and then. That way, Oldman could shine and it would fit the tone of the film since Batman had to take the rap for Joker’s shenanigans and is once more a menace.
I still thought Oldman shone bright as **** in TDK regardless of his unshowy role!
Cher as Catwoman? **** Off! Rachel McAdams, without a doubt!
Paddy Considine for The Riddler!
It’s more in keeping with Nolan’s vision of this Gotham saga then what Depp would do with the role… although Depp too could be awesome!
Good thinking, Batman. Considine should just be cast in everything.
I still think Gotham Central is the way forward. Check it out if you’re interested, you should be able to pick it up in trades cheaply. If you like the direction The Dark Knight takes then you would like it; it heaps better than the very outdated Frank Miller schtik that Hollywood still warbles on about. Jeez. It’s like comparing Hill Street Blues to The Wire or something!
I tend to agree that Depp would drag the audience out of the movie. He’s in that unfortunate position of being too big a star now after all that galavanting and swashbuckling. Ledger was able to immerse himself almost entirely into the character of the Joker (which was the best written character in the movie, unusual for a blockbuster villain).
I do agree that Gotham Central would be a great concept for a movie, but I can’t see it being used as the basis of the next entry into this franchise – I just get the feeling that the studio would be more than a little concerned about having a Batman movie that didn’t really feature Batman that much!
But, as a spin-off centering on Gordon and the rest of the police force with Batman as a sometimes glimpsed shadow aiding/hindering the police? That I can see working. And it would be a good way of growing the “world” of Batman. And for introducing more of the characters that people would like to see in the Batman franchise. Just think, they could spin it off into it’s own franchise and use it to setup the Rogues gallery and then switch back to a full on Batman movie with the established actors already in peoples heads as the characters. And it would be a great way of keeping the franchise active without worrying about burning out Bale as Batman. Hmmmmmm.
And as for Considine….after he was criminally overlooked for the role of Jigsaw I say cast him now! Who cares if you don’t have a script or even a story!
Nah, seriously, Considine would be a great fit for quite a few of the villains in Batman and would also fit into the aspect of casting “actors” in the roles instead of “names”.
That’s an awesome idea, man! I’d pay to watch that without scowling or feeling itchy.
You also get more time to develop villains and then, as you rightly say, integrate them into the next Batman film with minimal audience-fuss/confusion.
I think they’re ambition is to do something similar with the Green Arrow/Super-Max film (going on what writer Justin Marks has been saying) but I’m not convinced that will have the legs to get much past a first or second draft. It would make more sense to use the Gotham Central concept, as you already have two well-received Batman films and an audience that enjoyed the wider world depicted in the films, as you point out.
Stick Considine in, banish the hokey blockbuster elements (shit gadgets/’fourth’acts, I’m looking at you!) and we’ve got something worthy of the name.
Considine was too good for Punisher: War Zone, pretty much most of the cast is too good to be in that movie.
I’ll say this, Paddy Considne for Harvey Bullock.
Paddy Considine for Robin?
What? Did I go too far?
