The Orange British Academy Film Awards 2008 Nominations Announced

So the Golden Globes was a bit of a wash out, what with having to change from the usual “Gala Dinner” to a one hour news conference because of the WGA strike (and which summarily got trounced in the TV ratings by the debut of The Sarah Conner Chronicles) and no one really knows if the Oscars are going to go ahead as planned. But over here in the UK we’re still getting the Orange British Academy Film Awards with no problems! And the nominations have now been announced:

So that means Atonement has received 14 nominations, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood have each received 9 nominations and La Vie en Rose has received 7.

The Bourne Ultimatum has 6 nominations, with American Gangster, The Lives of Others and Michael Clayton receiving 5 nominations each. Out of these movies the only one that I have seen is The Bourne Ultimatum (even though most of the others are on my “must watch soon” list) but I don’t think it really deserves Best Director (sorry Paul Greengrass!) or Best British Film (my pick for that award would be This Is England by Shane Meadows – it surely deserves it as it’s a wonderful movie).

As for the rest of the nominations, my only other comment really would be what the hell are Shrek The Third and The Simpsons Movie doing on the nominations for Best Animated Movie? Were there only animated movies released in 2007? What about Bee Movie? Or Surf’s Up? Or TMNT?  Ok, ,maybe not TMNT but what about the others? I guess it’s pretty much a certainty that Brad Bird and Pixar will win the award for Ratatouille, huh?

So what’s your feelings on the nominations? Any there that make you clench and scream “NOOOOOOOO!” in an Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader type way? Anything you think is missing and should have been nominated? Or are these all fine by you? C’mon, we wanna know your thoughts so feel free to sound off, either in the comments or in our very own forum.

The Orange British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 10th of February, hosted once again by Jonathan Ross, and will be shown on BBC1.
