TERMINATOR 4 – Reboot More Than Sequel? And Director Attached?

Terminator was a cracking good movie. Terminator 2: Judgement Day was a brilliant sequel. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was…..disappointing. So what’s to do? Let the Terminator franchise fade away and just leave fans with the excellent first two movies? Or you could of course make a TV show based on the characters and then have another sequel which reboots the entire thing. Guess which way the owners of the Terminator franchise have gone?

Yep, reboot it is! According to James Middleton, who is one of the producers of both the Terminator TV series (soon to be coming to Virgin1 in the UK BTW!) and of the proposed fourth movie in the franchise, they will be introducing a brand new hero in the next movie, thus moving the story away from John Conner:

“It would include John Connor and it would also include a brand new hero for the movie…We envision this T4 would be the beginning of a new trilogy. We had talked about having Arnold doing a cameo and we’ve never been at a point where that could happen.”

Now, this isn’t set in stone of course, as there are still lots of things to sort out, but regardless of that this is a horrible notion. To my mind the best way to have continued the movies was to have made movie adaptions of the T2: Cybernetic Dawn and T2: Nuclear Twightlight comics from 1995 – 1996. Cybernetic Dawn continued the story right after T2, explaining how the Conner’s escaped, and eventually start preparing for Judgement Day (which they finally accept they cannot avert) and Nuclear Twighlight tells the tale of the end of the war against the machines in the future – just before they sent Kyle Reese and the “good” T-800 back. There’s T3 & T4 right there – and it would have very nicely dovetailed the entire series. But no, they give us Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and now they are trying to kick-start a whole “new” trilogy with brand new characters. Yeah, because that proved such a success for Star Wars, didn’t it?

But that’s not all! Oh God no. Why leave it there? Why not drive the proverbial stake through the collective heart of every Terminator fan out there? Yeah that’s a great idea! And how are we going to do it? Well, let’s hire Charlie’s Angel’s director McG to helm this new Terminator movie!

Yep, according to CHUD that’s what they have done. They have hired McG to direct. And I really have no more comment to make on that news. Well, apart from:

“That’s a wonderful way to kill a franchise dead, guys!”

Oh, and it looks like this is going to try and be a pre-strike movie which means a horribly rushed production.

You really weren’t hoping for this to turn out well were you?
