Watching the trailer again, the gratuitous bit with Uhura taking her shirt off was just unneeded, but then again I’m not a guy. I don’t watch the show so I don’t know if Uhura was there to be eye candy and nothing more, but that smacked of desperation to me. “Look, we’re not gonna bore ya! It’ll be sexy! See! TITS!”

You do know who/what the typical Star Trek fan is right?

  • HAZMAT Said on November 16th, 2008 at 4:05 am 8

hey im not a typical star trek fan…but i totally have a poster of gwyn on my roof and i play world of warcraft and i have a 6.2 gpa…my night-ninja warrior is a level 78…

    so there goes your theory
(no not really…but i would do anything to have a picture of gwyn on my roof omg shes delicious)

    kristina
how did you not like that trailer! it had eric bana at the end!
    ERIC BANA!

  • Kristina Said on November 16th, 2008 at 7:53 am 9

Eric Bana alone does not a good movie make. See Troy for proof.

  • HAZMAT Said on November 16th, 2008 at 11:29 am 10

yeah but in troy brad pitt raped him (2nd best sword fight scene ever..nuada scene is #1)
the cast is raw though….everyone…yes, even the wuss from alpha dog

I’m almost sold on this, I have to say. I have zero interest in the franchise, but this looks like the sort of thing I’d give a go to!

I’m excited. Well. I was excited anyway, particularly after the plot leaked and Harlan Ellison wanted paying, lol. Now I”m really excited. It looks and sounds like a Star Trek movie ought to in 2008. It has the cool aesthetic of the original series and the hokey action beats of the second and third season of Enterprise (which elevated that to a guilty pleasure). I think this will work. A Kirk and Sulu team-up is inspired! Love the action being spread around the team and why shouldn’t Kirk and Uhura have some fun? Nobody found it creepy that the characters in Friends were all covered in each other, did they?

Another cool thing about the film is that they have really worked some plausible character dynamics into the story. Watching an uptight, young Spock use extreme measures against the cocky but incident prone Kirk and cynical, cowardly Bones will be great and a nice context to revisit the original series with. Particularly with older Spock pulling the strings and guiding Kirk through. Brilliant.

I’m a sucker for Star Trek. What can I say?

You could say “Live long and prosper!”

You missed a golden opportunity to end on a proper trekkie high there!

    PS
Do you know how much googling I had to do just to get that “Live long and prosper” line? LOL
