Stallone, Statham And Li Are THE EXPENDABLES!
Variety are reporting that Sylvester Stallone will direct and star in his own action script, The Expendables, which details the adventures of a group of mercaneries trying to overthrow a South American dictator. Excitement is reaching fever-pitch medium levels because Jason Statham is on board and Jet Li is in “final negotiations” to join the cast too. The project has been described as “an 80s throwback men on a mission movie in the vein of Commando and Predator”.
Now I’m intrigued to see where this goes. I have to admit that Stallone’s last Rambo movie has grown on me quite a fair bit. I really didn’t take to it at all on first viewing and I really have a soft spot for it now. And, of course, I was one of the biggest champions of his Rocky VI too. Stallone could do a really crackin’ gloriously violent exploitation men-on-a-mission movie, and having Jet Li and ‘new action B-movie king’ Statham on board too (as long as he leaves his awful Yank accent behind) is all good.
But everyone across the interwebs is going crazy with this news, whereas I’m a little cynical: Back after the release of Cliffhanger, Stallone spoke about a project he had written (which I believe, don’t quote me, was called The Force) for himself, Arnie, Bruce Willis and Jean Claude Van Damme which Renny Harlin was going to direct and it was essentially, in his own words, a “men on a mission in Columbia” action extravaganza.
Colour me slightly ‘up’ for this, but has Stallone just pulled that script back out the draw, polished it a little and resubmitted it under a different title with a cheaper cast? And where does this leave Rambo 5 for Lionsgate, which they “think” is shooting in the “early part of 2009″ – Stallone’s Expendables starts shooting in February!
Hmmm… with such subject matter that could be closely entwined if the effort was made, could it be that The Expendables IS Rambo 5? Just hypothesising! Lol. Click here for the full story!
