Seriously?!? What Is It With You Yanks?

The previous weekends box office stats are in and Kevin Smith’s Zack & Miri Make A Porno is in at number two on the US box office, with $10.7 million. High School Musical 3 maintained the top spot! Saw V, according to some insiders, came very close to taking the number two position from Smith’s new movie with $10.1 million, settling into third place instead!

I got to ask… What the hell is going on over their in the US? I experienced it myself when I was out in NYC and I saw people queuing round the block for Max Payne, but have you people learnt nothing from allowing the likes of Meet The Spartans and Beverly Hills Chihuahua get to the number one position whilst quality product lags behind? Did the horrible 72% drop off after the opening weekend on Hellboy II not teach you anything?

Did any of you not read Kris’ review? This isn’t the sort of film that deserves to make Kevin Smith “money” (i.e. $10 – $20 million TOTAL!), it’s a film that happens to be by Kevin Smith that deserves to make BIG money, and one that Kris calls “… a smart, sexy, funny-as-all-hell movie that [I] will pay to see again!”

Come on peeps – get out there and give this movie its second wind and get it making Tropic Thunder / Pineapple Express / Step Brothers style moolah! I’ll be seeing Smith’s latest sometime this week ahead of its November 14th release here in the UK, but will most probably be under an embargo from publishing till the 12th!

hellboy 2 was amazing and the fight versus prince nauda was the best sword fight in any movie ever made
    no im serious.

and i think hellboy dropped in the 2nd week only because thats when TDK came out

    hellboy ****ing RULED. endo story.

the only thing that movie needed was gwenyth paltrow…liek seriously

i havent seen max payne or the porn movie (never will see the chihuahua movie)

    p.s. tropic thunder was epic.

i still think that if hellboy 2 was released a month later once TDK was watched at least thrice by everyone it would had made soo much more money

TDK didn’t follow HELLBOY 2 a week later. It WAS the next big release, but it didn’t follow on with only a window of a week.

HELLBOY 2 should have been a word of mouth sensation… this should have been a movie where people left the screening and told their friends to go check it out. It didn’t happen, and that’s criminal.

That’s what happened with TDK. It made big bucks from the fans and the morbidly curious. It made money from both going back twice and then some, but it also made a huge amount from people like myself coming out of it and going to the cynical and saying “You have to see this! It is really something quite ace. It is not what you think it will be, at all!”

And that is what should be happening with ZACK & MIRI. People should be coming out of that and extolling its virtues to people who are put off by it at face value and saying “It isn’t what you think! Give it a go!”

I’ve been saying for ages on this site that once Smith breaks free from the “niche” “cult” mode then he is going to be a director/writer of real weight – this generation’s Woody Allen. I stand by that. He has a voice that speaks for a generation. This should have been the movie to do that. It should be making HUGE money!

$10 million opening weekend is still great, don’t get me wrong. It’s most certainly not a flop. But sandwiched between one of the worst movies of the year and a tweener pic? No, it doesn’t deserve that!

It really did deserve better. Some folks have been hating on it, but I don’t give a shit. I loved this movie.

There’s usually MUCH more haters for a Kevin Smith flick then this though. Hell, most of the mainstream press I’ve read for Z&MMAP are flat out loving it!
