I haven’t had a chance to check the news tubes yet so I don’t know how “exclusive” this is – so I ain’t going to claim it as such but I have just received an email containing the “official” UK poster for Saw IV! Check it out below (click on the thumbnail to see it bigger!):

So what can we say about it? Not much really, apart from it’s fairly tame. But you know what? I actually quite like it! I’m not expecting anything from this entry in the “franchise”, but I really enjoyed Saw and Saw II. Saw III was a bit disappointing but who knows, this could be a fun flick! Just have to wait till October 26th to find out (who wants to bet that there will be a re-occurrence of those “people faint during horror movie” stories that circulated after Saw III?)
Check out the teaser trailer below, in a variety of different formats:

Hmmm, I’m not sure about this to be honest. I haven’t quite worked out whether I was just disappointed by SAW III or just utterly bored by this whole thing. I was reading an article recently that said Lionsgate are so confident of their franchise and have such a tight monetary deal re the budget that, ever since SAW II, they’ve always had the next sequel in pre-production by the time the predecessor starts filming and that this time was no different. SAW IV went into production whilst producers were on their second draft with SAW V.
Worrying!
Here’s my thing: Saw and Hostel are not horror movies. They are not scary. There’s nothing scary about watching someone get their guts torn out. They’re glorified snuff films.
Kristina, back in Issue #11 of OFF THE SHELF when I spoke of SAW III I said something I think you may agree with (bar the factor that the opening remarks about Dave and pimping his work are severely out of date and no longer pertinent obviously!):
“…This is the film that saw the conversation between Dave and I evolve in one of the ATBs regarding the current state of the horror genre. You may struggle to find that particular strand of conversation. If so, just head on over to his website, Egamer, and look up the article relating to horror porn. It’s not often I get to say this but Dave’s on the money with that piece! Personally, coming out of Saw III I was pretty disgusted to be honest. I thought the boundaries of what my personal levels of acceptance were had been well and truly pushed. I couldn’t see how close-up shots of open brain-surgery improvised with power tools could be passed as entertainment. I couldn’t see how seeing bones twist until they pop and shatter out of the skin in slow-motion or even closer-shots could be described as enjoyable. Worst thing of all, for a horror film it was not in the least bit scary. I know many of you will argue that my comments re the violence mean that I was horrified and, in that regard, the film had done it’s job but considering you’re not invested in the plot, the characters or anything at all and you’re just being barraged with shot after shot of extreme gore and carnage, how can you say that the film is doing a ‘quality’ job? One of my best friends gave me a copy of this on DVD because he said that I was mistaken in my opinion of it and I needed to look at it again as a trilogy. I know there are people out there who really dig this film because of how it changes the construction of the previous films overall, but for me I just felt as if the film was clutching at straws the whole time. I was never invested in the film in the way I should have been and question whether we’ll ever get to see a truly scary horror film out of the US now or whether it’s always going to be films of this type from now on. David Moreau and Xavier Palud have set the standard with this year’s masterpiece, Them. I urge you all to see it. One of the scariest films I have ever seen. When we discuss great horror films in five years time, I guarantee you that the likes of the Saw movies will have faded into nothing but straight-to-DVD hell whereas Moreau and Palud’s Them will STILL be getting talked about… probably because Eli Roth has re-made it really badly or something!”
What do you think?
On the money, baby. On the ****ing $$$$$$$$$$$$.
