Russell Crowe Is… BILL HICKS?!?
This is going to sound so bullshitty but last month I received an e-mail from a friend who, knowing that I’m a BIG fan of Bill Hicks, decided to break the news to me that they were making a Hicks biopic and that Russell Crowe would be playing the lead. I was furious and apalled (even though I’ll be the first to admit there is a likeness between the late comic and the phone-throwing actor), seeing as - although I’m no Crowe-hater per se - I just think he is incredibly over-rated and didn’t want him fucking around with the legacy of Bill Hicks in some ’safe sanitised studio version’ of his life. A Beautiful Life anyone? Then I remembered that the same person telling me this was the same person who, back in our Filmrot days, told me as a “matter of fact” that Timothy Spall was replacing Kenneth Branaugh on Mission: Impossible III (it was Philip Seymour Hoffman) and that Val Kilmer was playing the agency boss (it was Laurence Fishburne). So I put it out of my mind!
But then news broke this morning over at EmpireOnline that Crowe is looking to fill a hole in his schedule left by the delayed Ridley Scott pic, Nottingham. And this is what he has his eye on. Empire has higher hopes for this then yours truly:
New Zealand writer Mark Staufer has already written a treatment for a possible film, and is now turning that into a draft script, in the hope that it will hit production before the leaves unfold again in Sherwood Forest. And while he has not hitherto been known for comedy Crowe is not a bad likeness for Hicks - check out the AEnima album inlay that shows Hicks depicted here and tell us that doesn’t look at least a bit like our favourite phone-chucker - and could do very well at this sort of intense stand up.
