PUNISHER: WAR ZONE Teaser Trailer
I really liked the Thomas Jane starring Punisher movie. Yes, it had it’s faults (the biggest possibly being John Travolta!) but in the main I actually really liked it and was really looking forward to seeing where they took the character in the sequel. And then there were the names being bandied around for director duties for Punisher: War Zone. Names including Walter Hill. But then the bad news started rolling in. Thomas Jane left the production. Then Lexi Alexander (responsible, if that’s the word, for Green Street) was hired as director. And Ray Stevenson, most famous, possibly, for a starring role in BBC’s Rome, was hired as Frank Castle/The Punisher. And any hope I had that this would actually be a “good” movie seemed to start with getting smaller and smaller.
And I’m not even going to mention the official photos that were being released that made Stevenson look like Steven Seagal!
Oh, bugger, I just did.
Anyway, IGN have now debuted the teaser trailer for the sequel/reboot/whatever the hell they’re calling it, which you can check out here (if you can get the download to work – wouldn’t for me) or below, thanks to the wonder that is Youtube:
So what do you think? Couple of things that occurred to me:
- It looks very similar to Hitman in places (bearing in mind I have only seen the trailers for Hitman)
- Stevenson’s gravelly voice grated on me for some reason – trying too hard, maybe?
- What’s up with the skull on his chest flashing in the dark? I seriously hope that’s only for the trailer!
- Since when did Frank Castle get super agility???
Honestly, I don’t think this will be adding anything to Marvel’s currently superb crop of movies! Still, it does have to be said that if it had Thomas Jane in the lead and a different director then I might be more convinced! Hell, maybe I’m doing Lexi Alexander a disservice. We’ll find out when Punisher: War Zone is released in December.

I read the Lexi draft of the script, it’s got some stupid shit in it, and if it’s any indication to what previous drafts were, Jane had a good ****ing reason to drop out. Oh, and the skull glowing in the dark is written in the script.
There’s a lot cringe dialouge in this thing, but the thing that’s bugging me the most is the lighting, what is up with all the neon? I read people saying it looks like a Tim Bradstreet cover, I have a bunch of his covers for The Punisher and there isn’t neon lighting or sodium yellow going on in them. Going from more naturally light and dark shadows from the last one to this, it’s shit really, it looks like a SAW movie.
As for the cast, Jane not being Castle aside, I think it’s pretty top. Doug Huchinson, Dash Mihok, Dominic West and Stevenson a pretty good replacement. If they were gonna go with someone from Rome I’m surprised they didn’t go for James Purefoy, he’s like Jane’s doppleganger.
Finally, I was seeing the spinning upside more of a cribbing from The Boondock Saints and 3000 Miles to Graceland than Hitman.
Wow, I think is the longest post I’ve ever made here.
It is indeed, but you’re rewarded with a mention in my just published HULK review.
Re this? I was one of the defenders of the Tom Jane version of this property but for me, this is out and out “M’eh” of the straight-to-DVD variety!
