Oh SNAP! SUPERMAN Reboot CONFIRMED!
Well, the rumors have been flying due to a lack of any word regarding a sequel to Superman Returns To Pay Child Support, and now it has been made official. Superman will be rebooted. Now, I’m of two minds about this. On one hand, Superman Returns, whie not nearly as awful as some folks like to say it was, was a disappointment. Bosworth was terrible as Lois Lane, Routh was rather bland as Supes (but HOT), and Lex Luthor’s plot was pretty stupid. So, restarting from scratch is a great way to get it right. Then again, do we really need to see Supes’ origin story AGAIN? This may not be an origin story, since anyone over the age of two knows Superman’s story. I also wonder if this reboot means that the cast from Returns is out. I certainly hope so on some fronts. Rachel McAdams was born to be Lois Lane in my eyes, but I’d like to see Spacey back. I believe that Warner Brothers will decide to axe the whole cast to avoid confusion.
My main issue with Returns and with this upcoming reboot is less about the movie and more about the character of Supes. Can’t speak for anyone else, but I was never a Supes fan to begin with, so any movie that comes out featuring him has an uphill climb with me. I find the character to be rather dull and one-note. I just about threw up my hands in exasperation when they busted out that Kryptonite again in Returns. I mean, there’s only so many times that I can see that green crap before it gets old. When you make your character impervious save for that one major weakness (green crap), how can I get excited in the slightest about what’s going on when I know that it’s only a matter of time before somebody’s waving a chunk of the crap in his face? It’s like watching the Spidey movies and waiting on MJ to get kidnapped. It’s inevitable, which makes it lose any potential dramatic punch that it may have had.
The problem (at least in my eyes) with Supes as a character is that he’s such a goddamn Boy Scout. There’s no conflict within him. He just flies around, saves people, and lifts shit. That’s it. That’s BORING. If my perception is off, feel free to school me, but to me, he’s a straight-laced one-note bland character. The Lois relationship is the closest thing that he has to any kind of conflict, but the movie handled that so poorly that I didn’t give a fuck whether or not they ended up together. Instead of trying to humanize this godlike creature by having him hover outside a woman’s house like a goddamn creep, why not show us what it’s really like to be a godlike creature? I loved that brief moment of Supes hovering above Earth, listening to all of the noise before determining which crime to address (and of all the atrocities going on in the world, he races to a BANK ROBBERY? Huhwhat?). How does he decide? Is he guilt-ridden that he can’t save us all, that people being raped or murdered somewhere are looking to the sky hoping to see him and being denied because some bank robbery is going down in Metropolis? Rather than having Lois Exposition run down a list of his abilities to her sucker fiancee, why not show us what this guy can do and how he copes with the responsibility of playing World Police? You want me on his side? Show me what it’s like to walk in his boots. As long as those boots aren’t made for stalkin’.
Do I ask too much?

Thats a real shame. I know I might be in the minority but I actually enjoyed Singers Superman Returns, even with it’s faults, and I was looking forward to where they might have taken it.
As for Kryptonite, it’s not the only thing that can hurt Superman – he’s vulnerable to magic as well! But they don’t have to use Kryptonite as the rock – there are a couple of villains who are “powered” via Kryptonite (like Conduit) and let’s not forget characters like General Zod or Doomsday. Zod is obviously Kryptonian as well so has the same powers as Superman, and has a chance of defeating him, and Doomsday – well, he’s the one who put Supes in the grave!
And, of course, it was Kryptonite that levelled the playing field between Batman and Superman in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, when Bats defeated Superman in style.
Also, I’m glad about this in one way, as now they get the chance to reset Luthor. I so hope they change him to being the outwardly altruistic business man who is secretly plotting to take over the World. But I also hope they don’t make him the main villain again. Maybe they should take the route of Luthor not being the main focus of the movie and maybe set him up to be the bad guy in the second movie.
Now, the main problem we have here is the look of Superman. He has such an iconic look, and Christopher Reeves embodied him so much and resembled Superman from the comics so much, that we fall back into the trap that they need someone relatively unknown but who can also act and looks somewhat like Reeves. Unfortunately, Routh did, to a certain degree, even though he needed to bulk up some more for the role, but I agree that they are more likely to make a fresh start of it and not use the cast from Returns.
Now, I wonder if this means that WB have decided to use Mark Millar’s rumoured 21st Century take on Superman?
They really ****ed up Luthor in Returns. It was suppose to be five years, so he could’ve set his own company and “gone legit”, Superman comes back and shit hits the fan. It’s not that hard of an idea to do, instead they fell back on Luthor and his ridiculous real estate schemes.
As for the new movie, maybe they’ll have him set up as the puppet master and some other villain being used.
Sucks to be Routh right now. Supes was meant to be his big breakout role, and ever since he did that movie, he’s fallen off the face of the earth. I know he has a cameo in an upcoming high-profile film, but other than that, I haven’t seen or heard a peep about upcoming roles for him.
He’s doing the Dylan Dog movie Dead of Night. It’s based on an Italian comic, if you’ve ever seen Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore) that was slightly based on it. I’m looking forward to it.
And he’s in Kevin Smith’s ZAK & MIRI MAKE A PORNO!
PS
Kris – kudos on pimpin’ Rachel McAdams!
She IS born to be Lois Lane. But then again, she’s born to be anything! That woman is friggin’ uber-talented!
Oh, and seeing as this is the topic at hand, I was definitely not a fan of Singer’s SUPERMAN RETURNS!
Far from it in fact! Whether, like Kris says, I can be bothered to sit through ANOTHER reimagining though?
M’eh, probably not! Not unless it’s Kevin Smith doing his script OR at least just releasing a two hour stand-up movie of him recanting his anecdote involving the botched attempt to get SUPERMAN LIVES made as seen on the EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH DVD, lol
There’s your movie right there!
