No Guts, No Glory – Part II! Gazz’s OSCAR Predictions!

Kristina threw up her predictions and suggestions for this Sunday’s 80th Academy Awards ceremony which you can read here! I thought I’d join in with my two-pennies worth, not that it matters a whole hill of beans!

I’ve done the Oscar predictions thing every year, as far back as being a critic for my high school newspaper and during my tenure at Filmrot.com (good to have you back guys!) and do you know something? I’ve gotten it completely wrong every single time! I always think what I personally want to win is what is going to win and I’ve, over the years, started to realise that anything I’m passionate about will most likely be something nobody else cares about.

Kristina’s explanations for her choices are so thorough and intelligent that I’m not even going to venture into competing. I’m just going to stick with that tried and tested procedure of stating who I want to win up against who I think will win (and get it wrong on both accounts, no less! lol!)

Without further ado…

I get the feeling that Atonement runs the risk of a shutout. It wouldn’t be the first time a flick got nommed for a ton of stuff and barely won anything. Gangs of NY was nommed for 10 awards and got shut the hell out. Atonement will win score, I believe, but not much else. I don’t think the costumes of Atonement were all that great, aside from the green dress. One dress can’t and shouldn’t overshadow all the ornate work that went into the costumes of Elizabeth. Sweeney is in danger of a shutout unless art direction comes through for them. And although I think No Country will win sound, I hope the guy who worked on Transformers wins. He’s been nommed 19 damn times without a win. Throw the guy a bone!

And Michael Clayton is in line for a shutout as well. I don’t see that flick winning anything come Sunday. It never had any legit buzz around it, and it seems like it is this year’s “also-ran” nominee.

MICHAEL CLAYTON deserves to win for screenplay, I honestly believe that!

As for your comments about ATONEMENT etc. I agree. Although I didn’t realise that the guy working on TRANSFORMERS was the dude who is coming up for his 21st nomination without a single win, so I’ll change my mind and support him!

    Ya gotta love the underdog!
