Newsround – WATCHMEN Edition

It’s been quiet around here recently, and I can only say sorry about that. “Real world” concerns have kept me well away from actually writing anything on the site that I pay for for what feels like ages now – sometimes making me wonder if I shouldn’t just can it for now. But then, something drags me back and I don’t think I am ready to throw in the towel just yet!

So lets get the ball rolling a little with some quick hits of news from recent weeks that I have wanted to put onto the site but haven’t had a chance – and we’ll start with my most anticipated movie of 2009 – Watchmen!

AICN debuted the first photo of the Minutemen – who are the original 1940’s heroes who herald in the characters in the main story – and this photo is fantastic! It honestly could just be a tweaked version of the drawing from the comic it’s that accurate! Check it out here at AICN.

Now, a while back I told you about the fact that The Black Freighter storyline, which is a “comic within a comic” that runs throughout the Watchmen story, would be released a as an extra on the eventual Watchmen DVD release. Well, now it turns out that Warners are in fact going to release it, along with a filmed version of “Under The Hood” (the autobiography written by the original Nite Owl), as a straight to DVD anime to coincide with the theatrical release of Watchmen! Yes, it does mean that there is probably going to be a fair bit of “double dipping” involved in the DVD releases of Watchmen but it’s still a pretty great thing for them to do, in my opinion. And Gerard Butler, who was long rumoured to be having a part in Watchmen is going to be providing the voice for the main character in The Black Freighter.

As well as this Zack Snyder has told the New York Times:

“The main picture is nearing three hours long and I know I have a fight on my hands just with that,”

3 hours long?!? Oh hell, yeah! Seriously, if you have never had the pleasure of reading Alan Moore’s original comic then you possibly don’t understand, but one of the main concerns of fans of the source material is the fact that the story is so dense, with so many different aspects, that a movie might not do it justice. But if Snyder has a cut running at around 3 hours now – this should mean that anything that has had to be omitted to get it to run at a length palatable for most movie goers will be presented on an extended DVD a la The Lord of the Rings and that is an absolutely fantastic thought! Honestly, I would be prepared to sit through the entire 3 hours in the cinema but I know I might be in the minority with that one but I am quite happy to wait until it’s released on DVD and Blu-Ray for the full effect! And finally for now Dave Gibbons, who collaborated on the original comic with Alan Moore, gave an interview to Denofgeek and among other things had this to say on the movie version:

“The most important thing is that the Watchmen movie be a good movie. From what I’ve seen of it, I think it is going to be a good movie, and I think it’s going to be as faithful to the original graphic novel as is possible, given the constraints of a movie and the nature of a graphic novel. I think that as long as it’s true to the spirit of the comic book, and as long as – in broad strokes – it follows the plot and the characterisations … I don’t think you can ask for every individual detail to be replicated. There are hardcore fans out there who’ll be satisfied with nothing less than a word-for-word, line-for-line, scene-for-scene recreation of the comic book. I didn’t believe that was ever going to happen. Certainly, from what I’ve seen of the movie, it looks like it’ll be a good movie and very faithful to the comic book. If it isn’t, it won’t be for want of trying. Everybody’s using the graphic novel as their bible, and really doing their best to pay tribute to it, I think. “

Really does sound promising doesn’t it? Gibbons goes on to discuss other things like Alan Moore’s name being removed from the final print so click here to read the full interview. [via Cinematical]

And thats it for the Watchmen newsround edition – stay tuned for some more newsround ups very very soon.
