More INGLORIOUS BASTARDS Casting Related Rumour Mongering!

Having read Tarantino’s screenplay for the upcoming Inglorious Bastards twice now, liking it a little less the second time, you cannot help but envision certain actors in certain unannounced roles. It would appear however, that Teletext UK are in on the same game. Whilst reporting on the fact that Brad Pitt has now committed to the role of “leader of the bastards” (their quote), they also declare the following:

“… Pitt joins a cast already made up with Samm Levine, Hostel director Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Harvey Kietel, Leonardo Di Caprio, Nastassja Kinski, Larry David, Eddie Murphy, Natalie Portman and Albert Finney as Winston Churchill…”

Now, Di Caprio and Portman are long-standing rumours that everyone is aware of. Di Caprio is attaching himself to an abundance of projects lately, and none of them are Bastards. Portman is someone I could most definitely see in the role of Soshanna. And if the rumour is true about Finney, I can see that - what with him having played Winston Churchill in the BBC movie The Gathering Storm (as lazy casting as that would be!) But…

Kietel? Murphy? David? That’s news not mentioned anywhere else. Where did they get this from? Now, Teletext UK is far from the bastion of reliable information - and there’s worse ‘casting exaggerations’ out there on the ‘interweb’ then this but has anyone else heard of such developments?

Right, I’ve tried to control my geektasm for as long as possible but… Larry David? Larry ‘fuckin’ David? Larry ‘Pretty, Pretty Good’ David? Where the hell did this come from? Okay, we all know that this is most probably, and to quote the ever-eliquent Grundy, “bullshit” but how cool would it be for Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David to turn up in a Tarantino WWII movie?

Eddie Murphy has long been mooted as having some involvement, but then again so has Bruce Willis and Sly Stallone and that hasn’t come to much fruitation thus far. If they’re talking about Murphy for the role of ‘Marcel The Projectionist’ then this could be utter car-crash viewing not seen since Norbit. Could Murphy really pull off a French speaking role, in a non-comedy fashion? I’m not convinced. Plus, why go with a spent talent like Murphy when you could probably acquire the likes of Denzel Washington or Jamie Foxx if you really wanted? Oh, I forgot, that’s Tarantino’s “style” isn’t it?

Plus, Samuel L. Jackson is Tarantino’s post-Reservoir Dogs “lucky charm”. Surely he’s got to have a part in this somewhere? I see him as a better Marcel then Murphy!

What’s your thoughts? Does anyone else but me think that when the eventual ‘final’ cast listing is released it’s going to be much more low-key then what the media are talking up? Personally, if Tarantino makes this thing and doesn’t take the opportunity to rejuvenate the big-screen careers of Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson and Tom Selleck, I’ll be so pissed!! ;)
