Is THIS Why Howard Was Booted From IRON MAN 2?!

Entertainment Weekly has posted a very interesting article about the supposed truth behind why Terrence Howard got the ol’ heave-ho from Iron Man 2, and it’s a theory that I’m more inclined to believe than the other rumors flying around. Apparently, Howard was the first person cast for Iron Man, and was actually the highest-paid person in the film, a fact which surprised me for a second, but think about it.  Gwyneth isn’t really a box-office draw, so they aren’t going to pay her much.  Same for Bridges, and even Downey at the time that he was cast.  Now, it’s a different story.  If the article is to be believed, Favreau and company weren’t too high on Howard’s performance in the film, and were planning on actually streamlining his role in the second one! As such, Marvel wanted to reduce his salary.  Howard’s peeps were all WTF since they (and Howard, apparently) were unaware that Fav and Marvel were unhappy with him!  The plot thickens!

If Howard really did learn about it through the trades, that’s just a shitty thing to do no matter what.

gwyneth paltrow was mentioned in this article omg.

    she is irresistably beautiful

    i love gwen

hell i even liked her in shallow hal
    (marry me?)

    question:
if they dont wanna pay as much..why would they get the don-don? i bet hes like 3 times more expensive then howard!

  • Kristina Said on November 2nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm 3

Actually, he’s probably cheaper. Keep in mind, they don’t pay you based on acting ability. They pay you based on how popular you are and your ability to open a film. Cheadle’s a great actor no doubt, but he’s never opened a film by himself and probably never will.

And Hazzy, your thing for Gwyn is bordering on Twilight Obsessive Disorder ;)

With every production since HUSTLE & FLOW, there’s stories of Howard’s “diva” like behaviour on movie sets. Bernie Mac – who never had a bad word to say about anyone, let alone a fellow black man – did not enjoy their experience on PRIDE and spoke quite openly about that, saying that Howard gave “black men a bad name” with his behaviour towards those underneath him.

As Grundy says though, still not being given the courtesy of information before the trades break is not a big nor clever thing to do. However, a lack of courtesy breeds a lack of courtesy where I’m from.

I just wish DINNER FOR FIVE was still around so we could get Fav to dish once and for all about this! Ha Ha.

The fact that Howard was the “highest paid” on the first movie is just bewildering to me, honestly! And I love Cheadle and think he will be far better in the role, but it still smarts re consistency in the same way that Maggie Gyllenhall in TDK was an improvement but smarted a little!

And yes, Hazmet, your “Paltrow” thing is concerning!

    lol

    gwengwen is angelical
and NO! people obsessing over a BOOK doesnt compare to my infinate obsession i have towards the paltrow
gwyn if youre reading this i love you (why wont you return my emails?)
    lol

ive never seen don act or behave anywhere near how howard was in ironman…hes always..i cant explain it. i just havent seen him in a role that was like howards.
hopefully he wont completely change the character like gyllenhal did
    and she did
batman begins had a hard-ass rachel that was always tough as hell and TDK had a rachel that always smiled and joked around..in the scene when she was supposed to be mean when she interrogated the japanese guy she winked 100% of the time. if that were holmes she would have looked different
i just dont liek it when a new actor comes in and changes shit

I had never heard of Howard being a diva on any set, and Lord knows I relish stories about celebs being jackasses. The worst I’d heard from him was the baby wipes thing: he claims that he couldn’t be with a woman who doesn’t use baby wipes after she goes to the bathroom, because she’s not fully clean 8) Sometimes when I read interviews about him, he comes across as a bit of a tool, but nothing egregious.

What confuses me about this is that eveyone seemed to get along well at Comic-Con, during other promotions for Iron Man, and on the BTS stuff on the DVD. Then again, they aren’t going to have a whole section on the DVD called “Douchebag Howard”. Studios are good at concealing trouble onset because they don’t want to damage stars’ reputations or let onset drama overshadow their film.

Sucks that they all can’t be nice. I met Ashley Judd at an Obama rally last Thursday and not only was she gorgeous, but an absolute angel. I was really impressed with how sweet she was. Even if Howard was a dick, you don’t release that sort of info in the trades unless you have a vendetta against a person. I’m thiking of the Tom Cruise/Paramount debacle, or that Lindsay Lohan thing when the executive producer of her movie publicly called her out in the trades due to her tardiness onset, diva behavior, being hungover and unprepared, etc. In those sorts of cases, a public whipping is in order. Here, I’m not so sure.

And for Bernie Mac to say that about Howard…WOW. That sort of comment wouldn’t come from Bernie unless it was really justified. I agree with you Gazz, he always had nice things to say about all his co-stars, especially the Ocean’s lot.

I mean a lot of it is typical blog-rumouring that I came to hear, but it all surfaced before this particular news piece arrived, so it wasn’t as if it was “jumping on the band wagon”.

The only real piece that I can speak with total certainty on (asides from the story I read ages ago about Mac speaking in the press about Howard having to “man up, and pass the ladder back down to those following in his wake and not leave them stranded”) was from a Canadian friend who worked on the John Singleton movie FOUR BROTHERS.

She said that if you judged the movie based on Howard’s conduct then you would have thought the movie was called LT. GREEN and there was a “subplot” about four brothers. She said that he was late and discourteous to anyone who was not a producer or the director, that he had constant run ins with Mark Wahlberg and Tyrese Gibson as he referred to them as “catalogue models”, and that his assistant was brought to the brink of insanity through his behaviour on nigh on numerous occasions. She said that the same assistant was given a cash reward collected together by the crew, started by Josh Charles, when filming wrapped!

From what I’m hearing, Marvel were kind of cowards about it and didn’t want to get into a confrontation with him so they simply deliberately priced him out by cutting his wage by 70%. Which is pretty cold.

But as I’ve said before, your behaviour breeds retalitory behaviour in my opinion!

She’s a big Obama girl, even though her dad is a hardcore Republican.

    No one uses baby wipes.

  • Gazz Said on November 3rd, 2008 at 11:50 pm 14

I always find that when I see or meet “celebs” that it takes me a friggin’ age to clock on to the fact that they are who they are.

When I was a police officer back in 2002 I once gave a traffic ticket to Jude Law and didn’t recognise who he was and then when he signed it, I accused him of taking the piss and then had to apologise when he produced his ID.

I once shook hands with Heath Ledger back stage in Australia and it was YEARS later when a friend was recounting the anecdote and I was like “That was ****in Heath Ledger? Seriously?”

And, my most recent claim to shame, I met Josh Brolin whilst out in NYC and then a few days later I met Oliver Stone and I pulled the book I had with me out (KILLER INSTINCT – the making of NBK) and asked him to sign it and he nigh on knocked it out of my hand. It wasn’t until the plane ride home that I got stuck into it and realised that if I was Stone, I’d probably want nothing to do with that book either!

  • Gazz Said on November 3rd, 2008 at 11:51 pm 15

    PS

I use baby wipes! Not often, but sometimes I treat myself to a clean up with them after a wank – it makes me feel exotic and rich for a short period of time!

  • HAZMAT_loves_gwenpaltrow Said on November 4th, 2008 at 4:34 am 16

    @ GAZZ
“did i just write a ticket to jude law?”
