F. Gary Gray Takes Over For Darabont. Kristina Weeps.

I don’t know if you all have been following the burgeoning film Law Abiding Citizen, but it’s been on my radar for a few reasons.  First, Gerard Butler is going to be in it, he is the sex, and he’s playing a lawyer, which means he’ll wear sexy suits.  Secondly, I like the plot, about a man who is P.O.’d something fierce when his family’s killers get a cushy plea deal, and decides to go all Death Wish on the lawyer (Butler) who got the killers free…even if the vigilante is played by Jamie Foxx, who really does nada for me.  But the thing that sealed the deal for me was that Frank Darabont, as in The Shawshank Redemption, would be directing.

Unfortunately, Darabont dropped out not too long ago due to “creative differences”.  He helped write the script for Law Abiding Citizen, so I’m thinking the producers wanted to change some things, Frankie said “screw you guys, I’m going home”, and that was all she wrote.  Now, it looks like F. Gary Gray is stepping in as director.  I liked Friday and The Negotiator, which he directed, but this is also the guy responsible for unleashing Be Cool, one of the most incomprehensible, dimwitted films I’ve seen in the past few years.  I’m willing to give the guy a shot, but I’d be happier if Darabont was still on board.

Speaking of Darabont, you guys read his Indy 4 script yet?  I read it and couldn’t believe that it was rejected!  Thoughts on it or on Gray replacing Frankie?

Darabont was the only reason to go and see this movie.

I thoroughly agree with you Grundy! I re-watched the DINNER FOR FIVE episode featuring Darabont again recently and I loved that he was saying that after the burn-out of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 and INDY 4, he wasn’t doing anymore script doctoring or “for hire” work. He said he’d made his money on that, enough to be comfortable and choosy now, and that he can afford to have some back-bone and walk away rather than fight the fights he cannot win.

This seems to be an example of that, whereby he’s upped and walked from the project because he can rather then lower his standards!
