Edge Of Darkness was a six part BBC TV series made in 1985. It starred Bob Peck as Policeman, called Ronald Craven, who was trying to unravel the truth behind the brutal murder of his beloved daughter which quickly led him into the murky world of Government and corporate cover-ups and nuclear espionage. It was a critical success, making it’s debut on BBC2 and quickly earning a repeat on BBC1. So now, when a movie version of the TV series is being made, how would you make it a success?

Well, for starters, it’s not a bad idea to put a popular name in the role of the Police Detective (now called Thomas Craven) and, as it’s quite a driven character, why not get an actor who can play determined and single minded people very well? What’s that you say? Mel Gibson is available? Sorted!

Now, who should direct it? What about that chap who delivered the grim and gritty, and critically acclaimed, reboot of James Bond in Casino Royale. Yeah, Martin Campbell, that’s him! What’s that you say? Campbell was the director on the original BBC series? Even better!!

I’m not suggesting for a second that that’s actually how it went down but, and this has to be said, if it did then the people making those choices were inspired! I’m normally fairly anti the update of British TV series to American movies. I just am, ok? But from the trailer that’s just been released I don’t think that this is going to suffer one iota from the move. It looks superb!

As I said, Mel Gibson is very good at playing characters who are single mindedly set on something and, from the look at his work in the movie from the trailer the first thing that comes to mind is Porter from Payback (which was a movie I really enjoyed) so I think this is a great casting choice.

Yep, I’m interested, I’m excited and I want to see this movie now! Check out the trailer below:

Edge Of Darkness also stars Ray Winstone and will be thrilling audiences from the 29th of January 2010 in the USA (here in the UK we’ll have to wait until the 19th of February).
