DRAGONBALL Costume Pictures Online

Oh boy. Oh boy, oh boy. I really didn’t hold out a lot of hope that the liveaction adaptation of Dragonball would actually be any good but I really wasn’t expecting the costumes to look so…..well, so shite! These have been floating around the blogosphere for the last couple of days, originating over at JoBlo I think, but a lot of sites have had requests to take them down. For the time being you can check them out over at this French website (shoutout to Tower from Filmrot for tracking them down) and, it has to be said, they really do look poor!

And while we’re on the subject of Dragonball you can see how James Marsters is going to look as Piccolo. Well, how his costume is going to look anyway, right here at make-up artist Edward French’s website. They’ve ditched the robes and gone for a faux-Batman black muscle suit! That’s going to look great with Piccolo’s green face (assuming he still has a green face of course!).

I’m getting a Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/Power Rangers feeling here! We’ll see when Dragonball gets released in 2009. The only thing that makes me think this might actually be fun is that director Jason Wong is no stranger to over the top martial arts action, but then The One wasn’t exactly brilliant either!

**Update**

I’ve been thinking about this ever since I made my initial post about the costumes and I thought I should add a little bit of clarification. I am a fan of the original Dragonball comic & cartoon series as well as Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT, even though I did use to wish that they would hurry up and get to the action in the cartoon show when I used to watch it! And Goku’s costume looks pretty much like you’d imagine it would. It’s just that the costumes all look pretty cheap and crappy! What might look good in cartoon or comic form doesn’t always translate well into movie form, which is why certain comic book properties have changed the designs of the costumes when they’ve been made into a movie (I’m thinking of movies like X-Men and Watchmen in particular). And I think they might have been well to have changed these, as looking at all of the pictures, including James Marsters Piccolo, I cannot dislodge the feeling that this is some new characters for the latest Power Rangers TV series/straight-to-DVD movie.

Now, I could be wrong about this and the finished Dragonball movie might well prove to be great fun, but looking at these pictures I seriously doubt it.

Anyway, that’s just my thoughts.

I find it difficult to fathom why exactly anyone would want to make a Dragonball movie in the first place. There’s thousands of books with material far more interesting and original than this kind of trash, this current trend of remaking old cartoons into second rate movies just demonstrates a complete lack of imagination on the part of film makers.

This movie is either going to come out of nowhere and stun the hell out of us all, or it will be the giant turd that I’m sure it will be. Yeesh, this looks like crap. And it bums me out even more to see Emmy Rossum mixed up in this trash.

For Dragonball to work on the big screen it needs outrageous costumes and makeup, and over-the-top action.

If those costumes are an indication then I think it is safe to assume the action is going to suck as well. Oh well, another missed opportunity…
