Director Found For NEAR DARK Remake

Remember Gazz’s near apoplexy in the comments section regarding the remake of Near Dark? Well, you better prepare for another outburs, dear friends and readers, as Platinum Dunes, the company behind the planned remake, have found themselves a director for it……

It is none other than Samuel Bayer. Does the name mean anything to you? No, me either but apparently he has directed music videos for the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day & Metallica.

Oh joy – another music video director who is trying to break into movie making. Not being nasty, but as far as I can remember most music video director’s first movies are a bit pants aren’t they? Guess that doesn’t bode over well for this remake does it?

Platinum Dunes, by the way, are the people responsible for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (OK I enjoyed this one – wasn’t as good as the original but it was fun) remake, The Hitcher (haven’t seen it yet. Anyone got an opinion on it they’d like to share?) remake, The Amityville Horror (you know there are some films that you wish you could wipe from your memory?  For me, this is one) remake and the forthcoming remake of The Birds (why oh why? Has the world gone mad?).

I really like the original version of this movie, and I think it still holds it’s own against a lot of vampire movies – and if I’m honest it’s the movie that I’ll be judging 30 Days of Night against – so I really don’t understand the point of remaking it. Lets just hope they do a good job of it, eh?

This is just utter utter madness. You know they’re going to make the lead a female, amp up the “love story” even more, have Avril Lavigne on the soundtrack, get Adrian Pasdar back for a pointless cameo and make it a PG13. Absolute ****ing nonsense!

At the end of the day, I still honestly believe the only way forward is for a small group of integrity driven filmmakers, like say Tarantino and Rodriguez, to start buying up the rights to things like THE HIDDEN, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3, MIDNIGHT RUN, JAWS (and every other single ****ing indisputable classic!). They’d reap the rewards from the royalties but they’d protect future generations from the shock of this.

    PS
Wyv, those comp posters should be smaller man. Or are you desperate for entrants?

There was meant to be a smiley face at the end of that post – otherwise it just looks like I’m being “mean”. Which I’m not! Honest!

Anyway, Wyv, have you seen that our old stomping ground has been suspended?
:( or :) depending on how you look at it I suppose!

    Me? I’m more :/

Regarding The Hitcher remake, don’t bother with it. It’s basically the same as the original, I think Eric Red even gets a screenplay credit on it because they barely changed anything.

The one thing I liked about it though, was this scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZFO5KDUZ4w

In response to that scene: eww.

Yeah, but the original was brilliant because it was suggestive. This new one just thinks the way to do horror is to do “gore”.

    Pathetic!

Entries would be good – I spend my time getting these competitions and does anybody appreciate it?

For example – The Brave One – people should really enter that competition now if they live in the States. I think it would be worth it, if you know what I mean ;)

And anybody in the UK, you can get free DVD’s and a signed poster! Whats wrong with you?? Haven’t you heard of Ebay????? :(

  • Gazz Said on September 19th, 2007 at 9:37 am 7

Okay, you had me at “free”. Where do I enter? ;)
