Chris Columbus To Tell The RFK Story.
If you’re making a movie based on a book by Thurston Clarke called The Last Campaign: Robert F. Kennedy and 82 Days That Inspired America, then you want to put a list together of the best, most capable of directors with a “feel” for that sort of thing - you know, like an Oliver Stone thanks to his history with JFK or Nixon. Maybe even Roger Donaldson because of his excellent Thirteen Days. Or, well, you could just go with the man who has directed Home Alone, Harry Potter & The Philospher’s Stone and Adventures in Babysitting (aka A Night on the Town).
Yup Chris Columbus is to write and direct (with the possibility of just writing, producing and just hiring a director should a ‘big league’ directorial assignment for next year get in the way!) a biopic of Robert F. Kennedy. It will focus on his1968 campaign for President, covering his idealistic crusade against poverty, racism and the Vietnam War at a time when the US was tearing itself apart over all three, and his response to the murder of Martin Luther King in the middle of the campaign. Before finishing up, as we all know, with his assassination by crazed student Sirhan Sirhan.
Who’s throwing this on their “Can’t Wait/Must See” radar right now then?
