Doesn’t it only count as worthy news if the person in question talks about something that we haven’t already heard it? EmpireOnline talked to Darren Aranofsky about his upcoming remake of Robocop and it does indeed sound like he’s got the soundbites down pat now as he’s just rolled out the same stuff he talked to SlashFilm about last month, AICN the month before that and so on and so forth. But for those of you in need of every little tidbit of information on this upcoming project (which could be potentially friggin ace!) here’s the latest piece of recycled Aranofsky-isms:

“It’s a real reinvention. Me and David Self are working on the screenplay. He’s a great, great writer and we’re trying to do something new and fresh. We’ll see what happens when the screenplay comes. I’m a big fan of the original. It still holds up as an amazing film, and I think it’s more just looking at that same type of material in the 21st century and seeing where it leads us.”

I am excited about this, but it still evokes the feeling of frustrating I have about this whole “remake” thing! Robocop still holds up amazingly well to this day, yes, that is true. So why “remake” it at all then? Okay, go with rebooting the franchise with a new sequel so we can exorcise the memory of that third movie from our minds. But don’t re-start the whole story etc. Make a great fourth movie so that a new generation hunt out Verehoven’s sublime original!
