1st ASPEYA 2007: Volume 1 – THE READER’S VOTE

The 1st Annual Stale Popcorn End Of Year Awards 2007

(or 1st ASPEYA 2007)

… But published in 2008!

Volume 1: THE READER’S VOTE

Over the coming weeks etc. Wyverex, Kristina and I will be publishing our “best and worst” of 2007 along with our individual Top 25 picks of the year too! I’ve cheated a little bit with mine and used the access to DVD screeners etc. to pull some titles in that aren’t technically released in the UK yet, but I couldn’t help myself. They were THAT good! So keep an eye out for them.

Anyway, as you are all aware we put it out there for you the reader to vote for your best and worst of 2007! And… ONE of you replied. Yes, that’s right! ONE person took the time to send in his choices for the categories listed so, in tribute, The Reader’s Vote becomes hereby known as:

Volume 1: James’ Vote

Without further ado, here’s James with his picks for the best and worst of last year. Is his tastes representative of your own? Why not use the Comments Area at the bottom of this article to compliment, criticise or flame to pieces?

TOP FIVE MOVIES OF THE YEAR

(it’s not apparent whether James wrote these from 1 to 5 or in reverse order but here they are all the same!)

Zodiac

Curse of the Golden Flower

The Darjeeling Limited

Knocked Up

No Country For Old Men

BEST SCENE

The travelling montage in The Darjeeling Limited featuring Natalie Portman and Bill Murray amongst others

BEST ACTOR

Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men)

BEST ACTRESS

Gong Li (Curse of the Golden Flower)

BEST DIRECTOR

David Fincher (Zodiac)

BEST WRITER

James Vanderbilt (Zodiac)

And here’s James’ “awards” for all the Worst Categories too…

WORST MOVIE

Spider-Man 3

WORST SCENE

Peter Parker’s flirtation with evil in Spider-Man 3.  Awful.

WORST ACTOR

Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3)

WORST ACTRESS

Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man 3)

WORST DIRECTOR

David Dobkin (Fred Claus)

WORST WRITER(S)

Alexander Kurtzmann and Roberto Orci (Transformers)

And that’s it! Thanks James for contributing and for clearly putting a bit of thought into it – or for maybe just using the forum to exercise your clear distaste for all things Spider-Man 3 related!

What did you guys think?

As I said, stay tuned as Wyverex, Kristina and I will be publishing our “best and worst” of 2007 along with our individual Top 25 picks of the year too!

You know what one of my favorite scenes of ’07 was. Robert Carlye hauling ass in the beginning of 28 Weeks Later.

Also, the behemoth in The Mist was a great ****ing scene.

The ending of The Mist was a killer scene….

Why didn’t you vote for it then Grundy

    LOL

I watched a really bad version of THE MIST and am awaiting my proper DVD screener (which was posted on the 3rd december and still hasn’t arrived) before I review it but I’ve got to admit Grund’ – that ending was cracking!

Honestly the reason was I’m a lazy asshole. And I really don’t have much of a worst list either, because alot of the movies I saw entertained me.

I thought people would vote!? I did actually put thought into it, it’s not just pure hatred for Spider-Man 3 or the lazier aspects of the blockbuster movie!

Also, while I loathed aspects of the script for Transformers I was still entertained by what Bay did with it.

I read a fair few scripts this year before seeing films (Zodiac, Darjeeling Limited, No Country for Old Men) and I’ve found that my appreciation of those scripts being great translated nicely into the movies, which in the case of Zodiac and No Country I was overjoyed with.

I wish I had seen Into the Wild and Rescue Dawn and La Vie en Rose but Ididn’t and am playing catch up.

A special mention should be given for Eastern Promises, a film I really enjoyed and that certainly made my top ten.

I also would heartily recommend Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution to the readers.

Thanks for publishing my vote, Gazz! :)
