Netflix And Best Buy Go Blu Exclusive!
How many nails are needed in the coffin before this “format war” is finally declared over? The news is spreading like wildfire across the internet that both Netflix (one of the largest US online rental companies) are going exclusively Blu-Ray and BestBuy (one of the largest consumer retail stores) are going to be recommending Blu-Ray as the format of choice to their customers.
While they will still stock “some” HD-DVD products Blu-Ray players and discs will be more prominently showcased in the stores. Here’s part of their official statement from High Def Digest (via Filmstalker):
“Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We’ve listened to our customers, and we are responding,” said Brian Dunn, Best Buy’s president and chief operating officer. “Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them.”
That’s without a doubt a quote that is going to have the Blu-Ray format supporters crowing from the rooftops.
Add to BestBuy’s decision the decision of Netflix to drop HD-DVD completely, once it’s current stock of rental HD-DVD discs have fulfilled their natural life-cycle in the next couple of months, and the future doesn’t look good for Toshiba’s hi-def format.
But on the other hand, if you are already an owner of a HD-DVD player you may very well pick up some great bargins on discs during the fairly inevitable firesales!
And totally honestly, I did see a HD-DVD player in my local Tesco on the weekend for £150 and the part of me that is a complete techno-geek just thought “Damn that’s a good price – and just think of all the cheap HD-DVD discs I’ll be able to pick up soon……” but reason prevailed and I left it there. After all, do I really need yet another box underneath my TV apart from the Sky box, DVD player, DVD recorder, AV-Receiver and PS3? I don’t think so. Well, not just yet anyway…..
