**NOW CLOSED** 2nd ASPEYA 2008 # 6: THE COMPETITION!
Hey! Sorry to have to do this but the ASPEYA COMPETITION has had to close early I’m afraid. Within 24 hours of it going up we’ve had over 300 entrants already (shame the same amount of hungry-for-freebies types couldn’t find the energy to vote in the actual readers section of the very column the competition relates to!) and its becoming ridiculously time-consuming to go through each one, marking them and separating them into piles. We’ve got over 200 people with full marks so they’re going to have to go into a draw for the prize.
I genuinely didn’t expect this sort of response at all. I have to be honest. I was going off of the level of interest shown to the Reader’s Vote. I didn’t take into account the power of the “freebie”. So, yes, competition over! Please don’t send anymore entries because they’ll not be considered! Thanks for your interest all the same!
And so our coverage of 2008 comes to an end with an absolute barnstormer of a competition!
One lucky Stale Popcorn reader can win themselves ALL twenty-five of the films covered in my Top 25 of the year. Yes, you read that right! ALL of them… Click here to get a rundown on just what flicks are up for grabs!
However, I am not going to make it easy on you. To get the goods you’ve got to do the work. This isn’t going to be something as simple as answer one question then submit your name and address. Noooo… I’m going to throw the twenty five toughest questions I can think of relating to every film up to be won. The lucky winner will be the one who gets ALL of them right (if we fall shy of their being someone who scores full marks then the next highest will obviously take the prize).
Simple as that!
Get 25 out of 25 answers down (you MUST make an attempt to answer ALL questions!), send them to undiscovered_genius@hotmail.com along with your name and address and… sit back and wait! The closing date will be January 15th for all entries and winners will be announced within 5 working days!
The DVDs are in Region 1 format so you need to make sure that, although there is no geographical limit on entrants, your DVD player can play Region 1 DVDs! Also, the films are subject to Region 1 release dates – those that are already released will be sent out, those that have future release dates will be posted to you when that date is upon us. Is that all clear? You got all that?
Right…. eyes down, concentrate and see how you do with the following questions:
1. In most of my coverage of the film, The Strangers, I have suggested that it is a remake / redux / reimagining of which European horror-shocker?
2. Internet rumours suggest that Jason Segal’s screenplay for Forgetting Sarah Marshall is actually based in some parts on his past real-life relationship with which of his Freaks & Geeks co-stars?
3. Who provides uncredited voice work in the film Eagle Eye?
4. What can be seen on the right hand side of the screen during the final scene in Coney Island in the movie Cloverfield?
5. Sally Hawkins takes the lead in Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky but which other Leigh movie did she have a small role alongside Gavin & Stacey‘s James Corden?

7. Name all the performers and who they play, that make up the ‘Furious Five’ in Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda?
8. James Watkins wrote and directed Eden Lake but which Brit-horror sequel has he been assigned to write the screenplay for?
9. Frank Darabont pulled most of the technical crew from which hit FX TV show to work with him on The Mist?
10. Who plays ‘Ted Treffon’ in Burn After Reading?
11. Finish this quote from the hit-documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters: “No matter what I say, it draws controversy. It’s sort of like the ——– —–!”.
12. Which cult star of Arrested Development is seen sat next to Ben Stiller’s Tugg Speedman during the Oscars at the end of Tropic Thunder?
13. What, post-arrest, incident relating to Phillipe Petit’s incredible endeavor, did the documentary feature Man On Wire get its title from?
14. Judd Apatow produced Pineapple Express but can you name the three other movie projects he produced in 2008 (based on US release dates!)?
15. Iron Man actually came very close to fruitation in a very different form, with a famous director’s son (and New Line regular director for hire) behind the lens and an alien-worshipping A-lister as Tony Stark. Who are they?
16. Seth McFarlane claims that he based the voice of Johann Krauss Hellboy II – The Golden Army on which villain from a 1995 Bruce Willis action blockbuster?
17. Which famous writer/director and which famous comedy A-lister came on board to finally shepherd The Foot Fist Way onto the screen after years of being passed around the industry as “the drug of choice for any self respecting comedian”?
18. Which actress was the role of ‘Miri’ originally written for in Zack and Miri Make a Porno and which film, also covered in my Top 25 of 2008, was she involved in that prevented her from taking it?
19. [REC] is meant to be the “found” footage from unedited tapes of which TV show?
20. A famous stalwart of the Warner Bros. studios was originally considered for the Tommy Lee Jones role in In The Valley Of Elah but ended up not taking it. Director Paul Haggis states that, regardless, he became the film’s “great protector” – going above and beyond to get the film made. Who was he?
21. Which 1948 film did Paul Thomas Anderson state he watched EVERY NIGHT before commencing with the next day’s filming on There Will Be Blood?
22. Complete the FULL well-known Irish toast that Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead takes its name from.
23. Who is the UK musical artist who shares his name with the killer at the centre of the real-life events shown in Out Of The Blue?
24. When WALL-E first enters his truck home and turns on the lights, which character from Toy Story can be seen in his collection?
25. Who does Joshua Harto play in The Dark Knight and what do some fanboys consider to be the ‘conspiracy’ surrounding his character’s name?
GOOD LUCK!

Damn, you really aren’t screwing around with those questions!
GOOD!
I’d do this but I got most of the movies or plan to get on Blu-ray once I can afford it.
Yeah Kris, they’ve got to WORK for this prize like they REALLY want it. Ha Ha.
Great prize huh? I am NEVER EVER EVER going to bad mouth my little marketing firm people ever again! Promise. Well, until next time! Ha Ha.
Closed already? Typical. Pretty sure I nailed all 25 and you close it early.. disappointed *sniff*
Sorry Nomis but once again we got ****ing riddled with the cheat entries as well as the legitimate ones so it was the only way to stop it. You can still send me your attempt and i’ll let you know how you fared.
Without wanting to sound like a **** isn’t ending a comeptition earlier than advertised , erm, illegal…
The very fact that i very graciously decided to not void the comp full stop in the face of out and out cheating, should offset any accusations of illegality. Thanks for your thoughts anyway sir.
